Welsh Government Announces Grants for Promoting the Welsh Language through Technology

A new scheme is opening offering funding to increase Welsh language use across the country.
The First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, has announced details of a new fund for creative projects that will increase the use of the Welsh language.
The Cymraeg 2050 Grant is a £300,000 initiative which aims to fund innovative, short-term schemes that promote Welsh language usage. This will include funding for organisations that have new ideas for creating and promoting technology which supports the use of Welsh.
Funding is being provided with the objective of increasing the visibility of the Welsh language in all communities. It is also envisaged that projects will aid understanding and enhance opportunities for strengthening bilingual customer services.
The scheme will promote opportunities for communicating in Welsh in face-to-face settings, in the workplace or through digital platforms. This is a key element of the new Welsh language strategy – Cymraeg 2050: a million Welsh speakers. In particular, it aims to support efforts to increase people's daily use of the language and has a target of increasing the number of Welsh speakers to reach one million by 2050.
Launching the new initiative, First Minister Carwyn Jones said:
"We want the use of Welsh to be a routine part of everyday life so that speakers at all levels feel confident in using it in formal and informal situations. This fund seeks to broaden our horizons to pilot new ideas and work with a wide range of organisations to give everyone the opportunity to use the language.
"We are very clear that it is our responsibility as a Government to set the direction and provide leadership for growing the language. This fund is a strong starting point for our Cymraeg 2050 strategy."
The new fund will be open to organisations from most sectors, and it is not limited to current grant holders. The Welsh Government is especially keen to receive applications from new applicants wishing to promote the Welsh language to new audiences.
The application process is open until 22 September 2017.
