  • Local places with First World War associations of any kind.
  • Objects, photographs, documents, books and newspapers which tell the stories of individuals and communities involved in or affected by the war.
  • Training trenches or airfields.
  • Buildings and structures used in the war or affected by the war (eg factories or hospitals).
  • Places, objects and collections linked to the industrial, maritime and transport heritage of the First World War.
  • Memorials of all kinds, including memorial gardens, commemorating lives lost in the war.
  • Existing recordings of people’s memories and experiences from the First World War.
  • The memories and experiences of people who were affected by the First World War after it happened, such as the children of people involved.
  • Art, literature, music, theatre, film and popular culture focusing on the First World War, either created during the war or in later years.

Nesta creates directory of UK crowdfunding platforms

Innovation foundation Nesta has published an online directory of UK crowdfunding platforms, with the aim of helping charities, community groups, businesses and individuals to access this growing source of finance.

Crowdingin.com is available at no charge, and lets users filter searches by the type of funding being sought and the sectors that platforms specialise in.
Search by sector and area of interest
  • Business finance: Access to finance for startups or established businesses
  • Social Good: Finance for projects that deliver a significant benefit to society
  • Arts-Creative: Finance for projects that have creativity at their core
Search by crowdfunding model
  • Donation: Fund  projects by getting small donations from a large number of people
  • Reward: Source small amounts from individuals in exchange for rewards
  • Lending: Borrow from the crowd with individuals contributing small parts of the overall loan amount
  • Equity: Seek investment from the crowd in exchange for a share in your business or project
The site currently lists 31 platforms, each featuring a summary of their services and their conditions of use. Sites listed include Bloom VC, Cancer Research UK's MyProjects, Crowdrise and Pledge Music.
At the same time, Nesta has published a how-to guide to crowdfunding, Working The Crowd, which can be downloaded at no charge.
Liam Collins, Nesta policy advisor and crowdfunding researcher, said: "As the crowdfunding market grows, so too does the number of platforms that facilitate the exchange between the crowd of funders and those seeking finance. Crowdingin.com will help users navigate the options open to them."

Wishgenie offers free crowdfunding platform to local groups and charities

Wishgenie is a new crowdfunding web platform that enables group and social giving "to make dreams come true". It offers a range of fundraising, volunteering and buying tools with the aim of bringing much of people's giving together in one place.

The site, which launched yesterday, can be used to:
  • raise funds for schools, charities or non-profit organisations such as churches or voluntary groups
·         seek sponsorship for a charity run or event
·         recruit volunteers
·         club together to buy a friend’s birthday or wedding present
·         give to a cause as part of your weekly grocery shop
Wishgenie CEO David Berney,  former CEO of the Organic and Natural Food Company, said: "Everyone has their favourite social platform for connecting with friends or networking with businesses. Wishgenie is the first to simplify the act of giving or volunteering to just a few clicks.
"In addition, Wishgenie was created to ensure that 100% of the money donated goes to those in need, so unlike other fundraising tools such as JustGiving and Virgin Money Giving, we don’t take a single penny of that generosity to finance our own business. Even when signing up for a store card via Wishgenie, a percentage of your weekly grocery spend is given back to your favourite cause.
"On top of this we will also be donating 10% of any profits to charity."
Wishgenie does not handle or receive the donations: they are processed immediately by PayPal and received by the charity or beneficiary. PayPal does of course levy its own charges.
Wishgenie generates its income from affiliate partnerships with the major supermarkets.
Margaret Ambrose, head of fundraising for Ray's Playhouse, which is using the platform, said: "Wishgenie is not only a fantastic toolto vastly expand our fundraising reach and find volunteers to help out, it alsoallows us to visibly thank all the generous local businesses who have kindly donated funds or provided us with free services."

Small charities offered chance to promote fundraising message to eBay users

Small charities can enter a competition to win the opportunity to have their fundraising message promoted to eBay shoppers as they checkout on the site. To be eligible, charities must have an annual turnover of less than £1.5 million.
The eBay Give at Checkout feature allows shoppers to make a small donation to a charity when they are purchasing an item.  In 2012 eBay buyers donated over £17,000 to the winners of this competition.
The competition, which is now in its third year, is run as part of Small Charity Week 2013. Organisers the FSI have joined forces with eBay for Charity to offer five small charities the chance to benefit from this promotion.

How to enter

Small charities should submit a 90-character fundraising message that they would like to see publicised on eBay. The deadline is 29 May 2013.
Lorin May, Head of Charity and Sustainability, eBay Europe said: "eBay for Charity allows charities of any size, large and small, to raise unrestricted funds via donations from eBay users or charities’ own trading.  To date more than £48 million has been raised for over 7,500 organisations, and we look forward to working with more small charities to help them use eBay to fundraise."

Consultation on proposed new Big Lottery Fund policy direction for Wales

The Big lottery Fund, which was set up in 2004, is the largest distributor of funding from the National Lottery to good causes. We aim to bring real improvements to communities and to the lives of people most in need. As an outcomes funder we are interested in what works and what makes a positive difference to the communities in which we deliver funding.
Now, more than ever, BIG needs to be responsive to the changing needs of the communities that we serve.  We want to ensure that we intelligently address these needs and welcome the views of others on how we best achieve this.
This consultation, on behalf of the Welsh Government, invites views from a wide range of stakeholders including third, public and private sector organisations.
The consultation closes at noon on 17/06/2013

NEW CHARITY RETAIL GIFT AID GUIDANCE

HMRC have published long awaited guidance on the new rules for claiming Gift Aid on the sale of goods in charity shops.

The new rules went live from April of this year. However, it is believed that few charities were willing to implement new processes until guidance was made available to explain the rules in more detail. It is hoped that the new guidance will now indeed allow charities to take advantage of the new rules which were designed to cut the universally excepted inefficiencies.
The original HMRC press release that announced the proposal in December 2012 stated 'the new processes, which are optional for shops and donors, allow donors to authorise the gift of up to £100 of sale proceeds (for goods sold by a charity operating the shop directly) or £1,000 of sales proceeds (for goods sold by a trading subsidiary of the charity) without the shop needing to seek the supporter’s permission to claim the tax relief.'
The new guidance can be accessed here
