European Consultation on Crowd Funding

The consultation will be looking at its potential benefits, risks, and whether there should be a European framework to support both those who develop crowd-funding platforms and to reduce the risks to those who make use of such platforms to finance projects.

Lankelly Chase Foundation Open Call for Project Ideas

First Light Film Nation UK Outreach Grant Programme

Grants of up to £10,000 are available to engage young people aged 14 to 19 years who are not in formal education in a project that combines watching, making and understanding of film.

Funding is available for the following:

·     Projects which provide filmmaking training, plus elements of watching and understanding film for at least 20 disadvantaged young people aged 14 to 19 years.

·     Projects that match disadvantaged young people who are not in mainstream education with professional filmmakers with an extensive track record of working in film with disadvantaged young people.

·     Projects that recognise film is a powerful tool for engaging disadvantaged young people and empower those young people to lead in all areas of the process and give them a voice.

·     Projects that include substantial complementary watching and understanding activity such as a mini festival, screenings and master classes.

·     Projects that result in the making of two short films that are up to five minutes duration each.

Constituted organisations with a registered office in the UK are eligible to apply; this includes limited companies, local authorities, schools and charities.  

A maximum of 70 grant applications will be accepted. If the cap of 70 applications is not reached then the deadline for applications is 21 October 2013 (2pm).

UK population identified by attitude to charity giving

CAF have just released a new report that segments the UK population according to their attitude to charity.

They have identified three key groups – The Civic Core, The Middle Ground and Zero Givers.

SPORT RELIEF UPDATE

Sport Relief returns next year and with a difference. In addition to its Sport Relief Mile running events, it will now operate a series of swimming and cycling events.

The events will take place across the country from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March 2014. There will even be events at London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The 2014 campaign is entitled 'the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Games'. Olympians Sir Chris Hoy, Jonnie Peacock and Rebecca Adlington are promoting it.

In the promotional video they ask the public to consider:

• cycling three, 25 or 55 miles
• running one, three or six miles
• swimming 1.5, 2.5 or 5km

Crowdfunding secures football club future

The fans of football club Kettering Town’ have turned to online crowdfunding to raise the money that will save the club from closure. The club has debts of £58,000, so the fans decided to use JustGiving's new crowdfunding tool. They have set up a campaign and invited football fans from around the world to contribute. Within its first few hours the campaign had raised £3,000, including from fans at many other clubs. One Crystal Palace fan who has contributed said: “I know how it feels for your club to be threatened with extinction. Glad I’m able to help save this club.” A Manchester United fan said: "I'm a Manchester United fan, but also a fan of the game. No club should be wound up!" Kettering Town FC was formed in 1872 and is a central part of the town and its community. It is currently in Southern League Division one. The campaign aimed to raise £20,000 towards the £58,000 debts. It has now achieved that goal. Mark Severn, head of Kettering Town Supporters Club, said: “With the likes of Gareth Bale earning £300,000 a week it seems unfair that our club could go under for the amount he roughly makes in two days. "We’re campaigning through outreach on Twitter, thanks to enormous help from Matthew Timms of Footy Accumulators and their magnificent army of followers, to save Kettering Town Football Club ourselves, and discovering JustGiving’s crowdfunding tool has given us a great starting point to help make this happen.” 

JustGiving's new community crowdfunding platform is designed to help bring people in local communities together in order to fund social projects at grassroots levels.

COMIC RELIEF MAKES GIFT AID SOFTWARE AVAILABLE FOR CHARITIES

Comic Relief is making its Gift Aid software available to other charities for free on an open source basis to help the sector deal with the move to Charities Online, HMRC’s new system for claiming Gift Aid.

Comic Relief's Gift Aid Interface Link software (GAIL) is already accredited by HMRC. Charities can now integrate it with their existing Gift Aid system to help them meet the new requirements regarding Gift Aid. From 1 October this year, charities that process batches of more than 1,000 claims must submit Gift Aid repayment data through HMRC's Charities Online system.

Comic Relief's Business Director, Colin Simon, explained: "Comic Relief is a strong supporter of anything that makes claiming Gift Aid easier and more automated. Having developed this tool for our own use, and knowing it has the flexibility to work with other systems, we are pleased to share it with the wider sector.”

The code and terms of use are available on Github. The Windows software can be used now, a little earlier than Comic Relief had originally expected. Most charities will require a technology expert to integrate it with their system.

GAIL does not support the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme.
