Big Lottery Fund Delays in Application Process

The implementation of a new funding management system at the Big Lottery Fund is causing delays in getting back to applicants at 'all stages and in all programmes' - including the programmes Awards for All and Reaching Communities.
Advice line staff recommend that new applicants allow extra time for their applications to be assessed. At the moment, for example, rather than the usual six weeks to get a decision on an Awards for All application, it could take 12 weeks.
The advice is to apply as early as possible, and to consider what action to take if there is a delay in getting a decision. Could the start of the project be postponed, for example?
It is not only new applicants that are being affected. Delays are also affecting groups that have already applied. They are being advised that it will take longer than usual to get a decision. If the application is successful, it could also take longer than usual to be given approval and start the project.
Any questions should be addressed to the Big Lottery Fund Advice Line on 0845 4 10 20 30.

BBC Cymru Wales - Have You Got News for Us? Workshop Aberystwyth / Gweithdy 'Have You Got News for Us?' Aberystwyth

"Have You Got News for Us?" Do you want to get your third sector organisations stories heard but don't quite know how? BBC Cymru Wales invites you to a workshop to improve your knowledge with some stories being broadcast on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru as a part of our 'Charity Broadcasts' project.

This is a fantastic free opportunity to meet with programme makers where they will outline what makes a good broadcast story and will help you shape your message. The half-day workshop will be held on the morning of the 8th of January at the Theatre, Film & Television Department, Parry Williams Building, Aberystwyth University, where producers from BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru will discuss the way they find stories and which elements will put your stories ahead of the rest.
It will be an interactive workshop with participants asked to describe their experiences with the media, bring forward interesting ideas that might make good stories which BBC staff will then help take to the next level. These real life examples will be used to highlight good and bad practice with some of the stories being picked up by the programme teams to be broadcast.
As some of the stories developed will be broadcast on BBC Radio Cymru, organisations must have representatives who are confident Welsh speakers and are happy to be interviewed in Welsh on the radio.
Please note: Although the person/people attending the workshop do not need to speak Welsh, you must have a senior member of the organisation (i.e. trustee, senior staff member, long term volunteer) and a case study (someone the organisation is working with now or has helped in the past) who would be capable and confident of speaking on behalf of the charity. They do not need to come to the workshop but must be willing to speak in Welsh on the radio on behalf of the charity if Radio Cymru would like to broadcast an item at a future date.
Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, and a waiting list kept if necessary with 2 places available to each charity.
If you would like to attend, please email cerys.rees@bbc.co.uk including the details below. If you have any questions, please contact Aled Rowlands on 02920 322373.

Wales Economic Growth Fund 2

The Welsh Government has opened the second 2013 phase of its Wales Economic Growth Fund – a £30 million economic stimulus designed to help private and social enterprises through the prevailing economic downturn.
The initiative is a short-term, fast-track fund for Welsh businesses and social enterprises, providing immediate access to non-repayable capital funding for investments that will create and retain employment opportunities, growth and wealth.
Funding allocations for 2013 are delivered two phases. Phase 1, which has now completed, provided grants of between £50,000 and £100,000 for smaller enterprises. The current phase, Phase 2, is providing grants of £100,000 and over for those enterprises requiring larger investments.
Eligible expenditure can include new investment in capital assets (machinery, computer equipment, buildings etc). Intellectual property bought from a third party, professional fees and other one off costs related to the investment may also be eligible. Additionally, revenue costs associated with the capital investment can be funded.
Wales-based organisations operating within the private and non-profit social enterprise sectors that have projects planned to improve productivity and create and maintain jobs may be eligible for support.
Expressions of Interest for Phase Two are now being invited with a deadline for submissions of 16 December 2013.

Wales in Edinburgh Grant Scheme

The Wales in Edinburgh funding scheme provides support for Wales-based performing arts companies to produce and present their work at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival. For Wales’ performing arts companies it represents an opportunity to present their work internationally.
The Festival is attended by audiences, programmers, promoters and producers from across the UK and the world. The Arts Council of Wales believes that its performing arts companies should be given the chance to shine in such a global context. From an artistic perspective, the Festival allows us to show some of Wales’ best work to the world.
Grants of up to £12,000 are available. Grants will cover up to 75% of total eligible project cost; therefore the applicant must contribute at least 25% of the necessary costs from alternative sources
The Arts Council of Wales envisages making approximately ten grant awards.
Performing arts companies that are based in Wales are eligible to apply.
The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm on Friday 10 January 2014.

Rethinking Parks

The programme has been launched by Nesta, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund.
Voluntary and community sector organisations and public sector organisations from across the UK may apply for grants of between £50,001 and £100,000 as well as nonfinancial support to carry out their innovative ideas to make the UK's public parks financially sustainable.
The grants programme will help park managers and those responsible for park funding and maintenance to test new options for generating income and managing their park. Grants can be used to fund new staff, external consultancy and advice, training for staff and volunteers, publicity and marketing, equipment and limited capital works.
Nesta has published a report, Rethinking Parks: Exploring New Business Models for Parks in the 21st Century, to coincide with the launch of the programme.
The report looks at existing ideas and innovations for managing parks across the programme’s four themes:
  • To support changes in park management and maintenance systems.
  • To encourage new organisational partnerships.
  • To identify more diverse sources of funding and resources.
  • To explore new uses and activities within parks.
There is a two stage application process.
The first stage is a series of free workshops and training sessions, which organisations are strongly encouraged to attend. The free workshops will be held in January 2014 to provide information about how to submit an Expression of Interest for funding.
The workshops are currently scheduled for:
  • London - 14 January.
  • Edinburgh - 23 January.
  • Cardiff - 28 January.
  • Belfast - 30 January.
Those who cannot attend these workshops may attend an online workshop on either 16 January or 21 January.
Shortlisted organisations from Stage 1 will be invited to attend a practical innovation workshop in March 2014. Expressions of Interest will be reviewed and shortlisted organisations invited to submit a proposal.
Organisations interested in attending the January workshops should register their interest on the Nesta website
The second stage will see shortlisted organisations submitting their full proposals in April 2014. Grant recipients will have 18 months (from July 2014 to December 2015) to implement their innovations.

Crowdfunding secures football club future

The fans of football club Kettering Town’ have turned to online crowdfunding to raise the money that will save the club from closure. The club has debts of £58,000, so the fans decided to use JustGiving's new crowdfunding tool. They have set up a campaign and invited football fans from around the world to contribute. Within its first few hours the campaign had raised £3,000, including from fans at many other clubs. One Crystal Palace fan who has contributed said: “I know how it feels for your club to be threatened with extinction. Glad I’m able to help save this club.” A Manchester United fan said: "I'm a Manchester United fan, but also a fan of the game. No club should be wound up!" Kettering Town FC was formed in 1872 and is a central part of the town and its community. It is currently in Southern League Division one. The campaign aimed to raise £20,000 towards the £58,000 debts. It has now achieved that goal. Mark Severn, head of Kettering Town Supporters Club, said: “With the likes of Gareth Bale earning £300,000 a week it seems unfair that our club could go under for the amount he roughly makes in two days. "We’re campaigning through outreach on Twitter, thanks to enormous help from Matthew Timms of Footy Accumulators and their magnificent army of followers, to save Kettering Town Football Club ourselves, and discovering JustGiving’s crowdfunding tool has given us a great starting point to help make this happen.”

JustGiving's new community crowdfunding platform is designed to help bring people in local communities together in order to fund social projects at grassroots levels.

COMIC RELIEF MAKES GIFT AID SOFTWARE AVAILABLE FOR CHARITIES

Comic Relief is making its Gift Aid software available to other charities for free on an open source basis to help the sector deal with the move to Charities Online, HMRC’s new system for claiming Gift Aid.
Comic Relief's Gift Aid Interface Link software (GAIL) is already accredited by HMRC. Charities can now integrate it with their existing Gift Aid system to help them meet the new requirements regarding Gift Aid. From 1 October this year, charities that process batches of more than 1,000 claims must submit Gift Aid repayment data through HMRC's Charities Online system.

Comic Relief's Business Director, Colin Simon, explained: "Comic Relief is a strong supporter of anything that makes claiming Gift Aid easier and more automated. Having developed this tool for our own use, and knowing it has the flexibility to work with other systems, we are pleased to share it with the wider sector.”

The code and terms of use are available on Github. The Windows software can be used now, a little earlier than Comic Relief had originally expected. Most charities will require a technology expert to integrate it with their system.
GAIL does not support the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme.

Broadband Support Scheme

The Welsh Government has confirmed the final deadline for applications to its Broadband Support Scheme is 30 September 2013.
The scheme is designed to reduce the number of rural areas of the country without broadband internet. It enables individuals and communities in Wales' remaining broadband 'not-spots' to approach service providers directly, with support of Government funding.
Support is available for up to a maximum of £1,000 for individual premises, covering up to 100% of costs.
The scheme is technology neutral and the Welsh Government does not favour any particular type of technology; however, examples of the types of broadband solutions that could be supported include:
  • a broadband satellite connection installed for the home or business;
  • a community purchasing a 'larger scale' satellite connection which is distributed around the village by a small wireless network;
  • a wireless network being delivered by a service provider across a community; and
  • a community purchasing a next generation broadband service such as Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC).
Individuals, communities, small to medium-sized businesses and third sector organisations in Wales may apply.

REMEMBER A CHARITY IN YOUR WILL WEEK

9th - 15th September 2013 is Remember a Charity in your Will Week.

Remember A Charity in your Will Week is an annual awareness week designed to encourage more people to take a moment to consider leaving a gift to charity when writing a Will.
Three quarters of Britons regularly give to charity in their lifetimes, yet only 6% currently include a charity when writing a Will. Nevertheless gifts in Wills are still the foundation of many of Britain’s charities, creating almost £2 billion each year, the equivalent of 19 Comic Reliefs. Without this income, many charities would simply not exist and others would have to cut crucial services.

COMIC RELIEF - NEW PRIORITIES REVEALED

Registered charities and other not-for-profit organisations in the UK are eligible to apply for grants of over £10,000. There is no set upper limit but most grants are expected to be for between £20,000 and £40,000 per annum. A small number of larger grants may be made but only where the work has either regional or national significance, is delivered by a number of partners or is clearly breaking new ground.
Funding is available for work under the following themes:
  • Better futures - improving vulnerable young people’s lives. Funding is available for organisations working with vulnerable young people, aged 11 to 24 years, to develop their social and emotional capabilities, including confidence, resilience, problem-solving and positive relationships. This includes work that creates the foundations for healthy, safer and more secure lifestyles, better employment opportunities and successful transitions from adolescence into adulthood.
  • Healthier finances - tackling financial poverty. Funding is available to support people to develop money management skills, to maximise their income, and avoid debt and costly credit wherever possible. Support is also available for the development of affordable credit and financial services.
  • Safer lives - reducing violence, abuse and exploitation. Funding is available to empower people to avoid harmful situations, provide specialist support to those in need and tackle the root causes of the problems it seeks to address.
  • Fairer society - ensuring people overcome inequality. Funding is available to support marginalised groups of people to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives as well as groups tackling some of the root causes of injustice by working together towards a fairer society.
Applications may be submitted at any time.
