Heritage Lottery Fund Start Up Grants

Grants are available for groups in the UK to help them create a new organisation to look after heritage or engage people with heritage, or for existing groups taking on new responsibilities for heritage.

The funding can pay for activities that:
  • Make a difference to people, heritage and communities in the UK.
  • Have not yet started.
  • Will last no more than one year.
Grants range from £3,000 to £10,000

Not-for-profit organisations and partnerships led by not-for-profit organisations can apply.
This includes:
  • Charities or trusts.
  • Community, voluntary or friends of groups.
  • Companies limited by guarantee.
  • Community or parish councils.
  • Community Interest Companies.
  • Social enterprises.
Organisations that do not have a bank account or constitution and want to use a Start-up grant to help them do that will need to ask an existing not-for-profit organisation to make the application and accept the funding on their behalf.
Projects must contribute to achieving the following three outcomes:
  • Heritage will be better managed.
  • People will have developed skills.
  • The organisation will be more resilient.
Start-up grants can support a range of things that might need to be done to get started as a new group or get a new heritage project off the ground. They can pay for activities that:
  • Make a difference to people, heritage and communities in the UK.
  • Have not yet started.
  • Will last no more than one year.
